Battery Energy Storage Projects by Michigan’s Largest Utility
Energy Vault (NYSE: NRGV), a global leader in sustainable energy storage solutions, announced today that it has been awarded a contract by Consumers Energy, Michigan’s largest energy provider, to supply two battery energy storage systems (BESS) totaling 75 MW / 300 MWh. The projects will be located in Iosco and Bay Counties, with battery deliveries expected to begin in Q4 2025, construction slated for Q1 2026, and commercial operation anticipated by Q4 2026.
The 45 MW / 180 MWh Weadock BESS will be situated at the former John C. Weadock Power Plant in Hampton Township, while the 30 MW / 120 MWh Iosco County BESS will be located in Oscoda Township. Local permitting efforts are underway in collaboration with township officials. Both systems will operate daily, storing and dispatching renewable energy to support Michigan’s peak electricity demand.
“This partnership with Consumers Energy underscores the critical role of advanced energy storage in supporting grid reliability while accelerating the energy transition,” said Marco Terruzzin, Chief Revenue Officer, Energy Vault. “This contract marks our expansion into the Eastern U.S. utility market and strengthens our long-term strategic partnership with a leading Midwest utility.”
Sri Maddipati, President of Electric Supply at Consumers Energy, added, “Battery storage will continue to play an increasingly important role as we meet Michigan’s growing energy needs. We’re excited to collaborate with Energy Vault to deliver these projects for the communities we serve.”
The projects will leverage Energy Vault’s B-VAULT™ portfolio and proprietary X-Vault integration platform along with the Vault-OS Energy Management System, providing flexible, efficient, and optimized operation. The company’s innovative system architecture allows integration with multiple battery and inverter suppliers and supports both AC- and DC-coupled configurations, offering scalable solutions for diverse project requirements.
With this announcement, Energy Vault continues to expand its global commercial footprint, with more than 2 GWh of energy storage projects deployed or in development to date.
